I get a lot of absolutely terrible concepts sent to me. I see bad ideas, bad executions, and just…bad. I’m pleased to report that today’s iPhone app is awesome. With the single exception of the URL typo in their email to me, I couldn’t find anything less that fantastic about this application that lets you control your computer’s WinAmp through your iPhone (or iPod Touch but I don’t have one of those so I’ll take them at their word). See it for yourself, and get it immediately because these guy need to be encouraged to keep making iPhone applications since they’re a select few that know what they’re doing.

I get a lot of really crappy iPhone applications sent to me for review. A LOT. This is not one of them. This fax app lets you receive faxes on your iPhone. That’s pretty cool since it’s somewhat inconvenient to carry a fax machine around with you all the time. Plus, as people start to lose their laptops in favor of smaller machines (see iPhone), apps like this are bound to spring up to help better serve the business community. The downside is that it’s a bit pricey at around $9/m but it’s also likely a business expense so probably worth it if you need an fax-receiving app.
The newest Shopping List iPhone application is called (surprise) Shopping List and is currently available for download here. This if the first application-application I’ve seen for shopping lists; by that I mean not one that’s just a web application that you have to load through the ever-irritating browser. Shopping List also lets you put in the quantity of the item you need which is handy if you’ve only been using the little notepad application and have had to guess just how many litres of soda you’ve need to pick up. Go get it!

Now that some servers are back online it’s advised you try to log on again to activate/re-activate and IMMEDIATELY choose the Restore Option from whenever you tried to upgrade your firmware earlier today. More news as it comes in.
If you just tried to install the new 2.0 firmware and it’s not working (and your iPhone is now broken) don’t panic. I just got off the phone with Apple and they informed me that SO MANY people are attempting to upgrade now that their servers can’t take all the traffic to the requisite stop at the iTunes store and that it should be cleared up by 3pm EST.
In case you live in a cave, the iPhone 3G was released today. Additionally, to appease those of us who already have an iPhone, the 2.0 software was semi-released.
I just upgraded it and it was a snap. The directions (and the package to install) can be found here. If you’re installing the 2.0 firmware upgrade on a PC then you’ll likely have to upgrade to iTunes 7.7 first AND (boo) use a shift-click instead of the recommended option-click.
ZKout is a mobile social network. It’s free to join and has a lot of pretty cool features, namely communicating with people in your immediate surroundings (both cool and creepy). In addition to that key feature (which is obviously impossible with non-mobile social networks), you also get all of “expected” functions: mapping, photo/video sharing, online interactions, etc. It got a nice review from Apple itself, so go get ZKout right now. It’s free!
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know your iPhone is not running Android (the new Google platform) but I saw the article yesterday and for whatever strange reason thought it relevant. As a developer I had been hoping Apple would release a developer kit with 1.1.3 but that didn’t happen. I spend all day writing web applications so really the last thing I want to do on my free time is write another one when I could learn how to write a standalone. Who knows though, maybe one day the iPhone will run on Android…

Practically every non-web iPhone app requires you to have jailbroken your iPhone. I’ve gotten some questions about it so I’m going to take today’s entry to tell you about jail breaking your iPhone. Essentially what jail break does is decimate all the OS security settings. Suddenly you go from being locked out to changing things to being able to treat your iPhone more like a personal computer–you can get rid of the Stocks option you never use or add a button for Contacts instead of having to go through the Phone section to get it. It’s remarkably easy to do and you can do it here.

A handy little stand-alone app is TreasureMyText; essentially an inbox center for your text messages. The application also allows you to delete individual messages from the iPhone (a feature missing from the built in SMS application). The best part? It works over your data connection so archiving messages is free. You can’t beat an app that both does something useful and is free can you?
You do need to have your phone jailbroken though (plus a treasuremytext account [also free]).
